Arpentage – Fundraiser for the Matar Family

Arpentage - Fundraiser for the Matar Family

Despite the so-called ceasefire of October last year, Israel’s genocide against Palestinians in Gaza is far from over.

As artists and cultural workers, it is crucial that we continue to strengthen our resolve and learn together about what this moment—one for escalation, not falling away—requires of us.

Join Crystal Bennes at Embassy on Wednesday 11 March from 6pm – 8pm for an “arpentage” collective reading workshop of Mohammed El-Kurd’s ‘Perfect Victims: And The Politics Of Appeal’.

In ‘Perfect Victims’, El-Kurd writes of how we must raise the ceiling of what is permissible, renew our commitment to speaking the truth and dare to shift culture. ‘All of us,’ he says, ‘must embody the Palestinian condition of resistance and refusal’.

Emerging from nineteenth-century workers’ movements in France, arpentage is a practice of collective reading. A single copy of a book is physically cut into as many sections as there are people in the group. These individual sections are read individually followed by a collective discussion.

The practice of arpentage seeks to collectivise reading, to spread the labour of reading and processing an entire book across a wider group of people.

It is not necessary to read anything beforehand and those who have already read the book are very welcome.

Tickets are £10 donation. This event is a fundraiser for Suhail Matar and his extended family in Gaza.

No one will be turned away for lack of donation.
